The Northern Highlands
The largest area of the Highlands, it has some of the most remote and wild countryside with vast heather moors, high mountains, sandy beaches and rugged sea cliffs. Most of what you find in the Northern Highlands is on a large scale.
The coastline from Lochcarron to Ullapool is typical of
the jagged west coast, with numerous sea lochs separated by impressive
mountains. Peaceful Highland villages nestle at the bottom of the mountains
and look out over the ever changing seascape. The east boasts many
ancient sites - cairns, carved stones and stone circles - and long
stretches of sandy beaches. The sometimes wild North Coast is popular
with bird watchers, and migrating whales and dolphins can often be
seen.
